Medeniyetin görünür tanıkları olan mimarideki geometrik desen uygulamaları bizlere sistemli tekrar eden yapısı ile noktadan kozmosa açılan bir dünya sunar. Bu uygulamalar tek bir noktadan başlayarak daireye, dairenin bölünmesiyle aşamalı olarak desenin inşası ve yayılmasıyla adeta sonsuza açılımın cisimleşmiş halidir.
Peki ya arkalarındaki geometri?
Geleneksel cetvel-pergel konstrüksiyonu ile inşa edilen bu desenler adeta bizleri geometrinin doğasına davet ediyor. Ancak bu davete desenlerin konuştukları dili öğrenmeden icabet etmek mümkün değildir.
Serap Ekizler Sönmez, Mimar Sinan’ın İzinde Geometrik Desenler Atölyesi’nde, bu davete icabet ederek onun fısıldadıklarını dinliyor ve geometrik desen dilinin gramerini bütüncül bir bakış açısıyla anlamaya ve anlatmaya çalışıyor. Böylece birbiriyle alakalı görünmeyen geometrik tasarımların aslında birbiri ile akraba oldukları sonucuna varıyor.
Bir serinin ilk adımı olan bu kitap, özellikle Sinan’ın camilerinde çok sevilerek uygulanmış bir mermer şebeke deseninden yola çıkarak yapılan bir derleme. Desenin öncesiyle sonrasının tüm açılımlarıyla adım adım ve kolay anlaşılır bir biçimde, ana konudan fazla uzaklaşmadan ele alınıyor. Hem alanın uzmanlarına hem de geometrik desenlere ilgi duyan hemen her yaştan okur kitlesine hitap eden bu uygulamalı çalışma, çift seviyeli desenler gibi başka uygulamaların da mümkün olduğuna örneklerle değiniyor. Çok daha girift olan bu uygulamaların inşasına dair yaklaşımlar ise serinin sonraki kitaplarının konusunu teşkil ediyor.

Geometric patterns in Islamic architecture are visible witnesses to a civilization, presenting to us a world which expands from a single point, with systematic and repeating structures, to encompass the entire cosmos: The point becomes a circle, which subdivides to yield a pattern that can extend infinitely.
But what about the geometry upon which these patterns are structured?
These patterns, which are built with, call us toward the very nature of geometry. But it is not possible to answer this call truly before learning their language.
In Geometric Patterns Workshop in the Footsteps of Sinan, Serap Ekizler Sönmez has been responding to this invitation, listening to its whispers and trying to understand and explain the grammar of the language of geometric design from a holistic perspective. Thus, she concludes that geometric designs which do not seem to be related to each other are ‘actually’ related to each other.
This book, the first step in a series, is a compilation based on a marble grid pattern that was especially popular in Sinan’s mosques. It deals with all aspects of the pattern before and after, step by step and in an easy-to-understand manner, without straying too far from the main subject. Appealing both to experts in the field and to readers of all ages who are interested in geometric patterns, this hands-on study points out with examples that other applications such as bi-level patterns are also possible. Approaches to the construction of these much more intricate applications will be the subject of subsequent books in the series.
